This tape was made at 13633 Crenshaw Boulevard in Hawthorne, California. It was one of the last reels sent out to K-Mart as there was a change over to the Tape-Athon dual cassette units. Most of the tracks were commercially available at the time this tape was made but have become very hard to find for various reasons. The announcer on this tape is Bob Stone. He worked at many radio stations over the years, especially KGRB 900 AM in West Covina, CA. Good thing this tape wasn't returned or it wouldn't exist today. Thanks for uploading it.

I collect the playlists of the tapes and CDs that played at Gap and GapKids stores from 1992 to 2006. These were created by AEI Music through March 1999, after which Muzak took over from April 1999 on.

This is one of my favorite Kmart recordings, and I agree with one of the comments below about how it's very upbeat instrumental music. Some of the songs are not traditionally hurt as instrumental such as Hotel California.

Wow, the best of all the K-Mart 'store music' tapes! What makes this tape unusual is many of the songs are a lot more uptempo than what you usually hear on Beautiful-EZ stations such as KAHM/SiriusXM and internet stations like QEZ. On those stations you'll never hear covers of Hotel California, Knock Three Times or You're So Vain, all which are on this tape. (When those stations play covers of pop hits they stick to covers made famous by (for example) softer artists such as Bread or The Carpenters.

These songs on this tape are not represented anywhere else, on any station or any recording you can buy commercially. Thet are really 'vaporware'.

Stores and malls often played more upbeat songs, not soft, slow covers of pre rock era standards. Back in the 1970's/80's a company called Bonneville Broadcast Consultants supplied a lot of custom recorded instrumental covers of songs from those decades. They had hundreds of titles not sold commercially. I only heard one song on this tape duplicated by them. The others were apparently too 'rocvky' even for them.

I know the titles of almost all these songs but I would love to know the artists recording them in hope of finding better copies.

Using Sound Forge software I was able to extract out all the tunes I wanted and apply a little noise reduction as well.

At the 12:23 mark, I really need to know the name of that song. It sounds VERY familiar but I actually can't place it at all!

Thanks for posting this tape. The sound is good considering how many times per day it probably was played. And the storage conditions it was in for many years. My hats off to Mr. Davis for preserving this for retail history.

I recently bought a batch of Muzak recordings produced in the late 90s for several of their clients, including Gap, Banana Republic, Bass Shoes, Crate and Barrell, and others.

While those are very cool, your offerings are even cooler!

I love the instrumental mixes (so-called 'elevator music' versions of tunes) and prefer, in general, the tunage of the 70s and 80s eras, when I grew up and came of age.

I have sent an email via Archive.org in an effort to contact you (before I saw the obvious reply to posts ways to connect.)

I want to thank you for the K-Mart Music posts and to also inquire on purchasing CD copies of the collection.
